![]() Luhn Formula The Luhn Formula Check is mostly used for credit card transactions. The Luhn Formula Check verifies whether the entered credit card number falls within the guidelines and algorithms of the issuing card system.
The first digit of the credit card number defines the type of card (e.g. MasterCard, Visa, American Express etc). In addition to this, in the case of MasterCard and Visa, the issuing bank can be identified from the card number.
Card numbers are generated using the credit card organizations’ specific non-public coding formulas. The Luhn formula check digit routine is a calculation performed on the card number which results in a Luhn check digit. The Luhn check digit is used to verify the theoretical integrity of the credit card number.

Further processing of the transaction depends on the response code received from the issuer. Transactions not accompanied by a verification code are not submitted for authorization.
